Join Tucson-based performers Zach Warren, flute, and Michael Dauphinais, piano, for a recital of technically challenging and artistically rewarding compositions by perhaps lesser-known composers Lili Boulanger, Valerie Coleman, Walter Gieseking, and Amy Beach. The concert will begin with Lili Bouanger's D'un Matin de Printemps, a hauntingly beautiful piece that captures the essence of springtime with its delicate and lyrical melodies. Valerie Coleman's vibrant work Fanmi Imèn is inspired by the iconic poem of Maya Angelou, Human Family, that concludes, "we are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike." Walter Gieseking's Sonatine for Flute and Piano is melodious, elegant, harmonically unconventional, reminiscent of Ravel and Poulenc, a true treasure of the flute and piano repertoire. The concert will conclude with a transcription of the expansive Sonata in A Minor for violin and piano by American composer Amy Beach, a monumental and expressive romantic sonata, taking inspiration from Brahms and Franck, but still uniquely her own.
